In this article, Gilbert Durand offers us a beautiful exercise of mythanalyse, in accordance with the principles that he exposed in Figures mythiques et visages de l’œuvre. Studying the cultural and mythological elements of the Opera, locating its successive “intensifications” during the history, Gilbert Durand shows us how a sociocultural phenomenon can reveal the episteme of a society. The society of xvith and xviith centuries on the one hand, the Second Empire on the other hand, thus appears “contemporary” by the equal importance of pageantry and theatricalness.
