Paternity, maternity and joint parenthood in response to new contexts : residence with the father and alternating residenceThis article looks at gender issues in the re-definition of parental roles using the results of an interview-based survey conducted in 2010 with thirty-three separated or divorced fathers in the context of daily residence in the father’s home and of alternating residence. From a very socially diversified group, it shows that such forms of residential organisation led in all social backgrounds to the reformulation of paternity. Such situations, however, are the object of socially differentiated interpretations with regard to the notion of joint parenthood, creating on the one hand a solitary form of paternity associated with the disqualification of maternity and on the other a more egalitarian relation that can lead to renewal in alternating residence.

À partir d’une enquête par entretiens menée en 2010 auprès de trente-trois pères séparés ou divorcés, cet article interroge sous l’angle du genre la redéfinition des rôles parentaux, dans le contexte de la résidence quotidienne au domicile paternel et de la résidence alternée. À partir d’un groupe socialement très diversifié, il montre que ces formes d’organisation résidentielle conduisent dans tous les milieux à la reformulation de la paternité. Ces situations font cependant l’objet d’interprétations socialement différenciées au regard de la notion de coparentalité, construisant d’un côté une paternité solitaire associée à la disqualification de la maternité, de l’autre une relation plus égalitaire, actualisable dans la résidence alternée.
