Résumé En

This work deals with the restoration of a manuscript indirectly affected by a water damage: it was not submerged, but remained 4 to 5 days above the water level. The high humidity caused the migration of iron gall inks to the verso and around the inscriptions. The manuscript was frozen and the question arises as towhether defrosting is possible without inducing more migrations. To answer this question, we studied the behaviour of valueless manuscripts and test papers impregnated with bathophenanthroline exposed to high humidity (close to 100%). Below one to two days of exposure to 100% RH, migration may restart ifthe document is frozen and again exposed, after defrosting, to 100% RH. Reversely, after 1 to 2 days, ink migration seems to reach a limit and does not restart after thawing. Therefore, manuscript was defrosted gradually in ambient conditions, without any additional precautions. To limit the future weakening of the paper by the migrating inks, it was treated with calcium phytate and calcium hydrogen carbonate.
