In “Griechen und Deutsche: der Mythos einer ‘Wahlverwandtschaft’”, Manfred Landfester describes the various stages in the development of a “German Greek myth” (Griechenmythos), comparing the evolution of this notion with the political and cultural history of Germany at the end of the eighteenth century. He examines the way in which the “European Greek myth” (europäischer Griechenmythos), forged in the time of Johann Joachim Winckelmann, paved the way for the emergence, in the revolutionary context of the 1790s and in the work of scholars such as Wilhelm von Humboldt and Friedrich Schlegel, of a specifically “German Greek myth” (deutscher Griechenmythos). He shows the transformations of this notion until its decline at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
