Résumé
Historical epistemology has gained new momentum. This renewal leads us to raise the question of its genealogy. Contrary to popular belief, the expression was not coined in the 1960s, but appeared as early as 1907 in the work of Abel Rey. The aim of this article is then to provide a close study of the method advocated by Rey, as well as its aftermath.
