Au Rwanda, la fin des années 1940 marqua le développement d’une politique sociale visant à promouvoir la masse et ses représentants « Hutu » face à une domination « Tutsi » de plus en plus contestée. C’est ce même contexte qui porta l’élaboration d’une nouvelle tradition coloniale : l’institution football. Ces processus permirent alors à une partie des « déclassés » d’un ordre féodo-colonial de s’approprier les éléments d’un modèle dominant redéfini par une culture locale valorisée. Le «jeu de balle», dans la lutte symbolique qui caractérisa les rapports de pouvoir entre des catégories ethniques inventées, devait alors contribuer à l’émergence de nouvelles (contre)élites par lesquelles allait se jouer une décolonisation bien spécifique à l’histoire rwandaise.

Soccer and identity mobilizations in Rwanda: ethno-history of a colonial invention (1945-1959)In Rwanda, the end of the 1940s saw the development of a social policy aiming at promoting the masses and their Hutu representatives in front of the more and more contested domination of the Tutsi. This very context led to the elaboration of a new colonial tradition: the ’soccer institution’. This process then allowed a fraction of these outcasts of a feudo-colonial order to get hold of the elements of a dominating pattern redefined by the local culture thus promoted. In the symbolic fight which characterized the power struggles between invented ethnic categories, the ’bail game’ then contributed to the emergence of new (counter)elites through which a decolonization fairly specific to the Rwandese history was going to be determined.
