The reinvention or recreation of nature is a frequently employed concept in “green studies”. It refers, generally, to nature as a “social creation” (Evernden), and, more specifically, to literature as an alternative discourse to the natural sciences and technology. In this article the concept of reinvention is used as a point of vantage in the discussion of the relation between literature and ecology. The notion that literary writing may bridge the gap between nature and culture is drawn into question. It is argued instead that aesthetic reinvention, insofar as it can make us reconsider our engagement with the natural world, may be considered as a form of ecology.
