In this paper, drawing basically on a set of studies initially published in the French journal Pratiques: linguistique, littérature and didactique, number 139/140, in December 2008, we discuss the state of the art of popular linguistics in the North American and European contexts. Beyond the proposed mapping, we also aim to perform a kind of conceptualization of popular linguistics, offering contributions based on issues of epistemological, theoretical, representational, and practical nature, which, in our understanding, are fundamental for the study-field of language sciences to reach a safe dynamism without any kind of binarisms.
