Préalablement à la construction d’un lotissement pavillonnaire, l’Inrap a conduit en février 2009 la fouille préventive des marges d’une d’occupation alto médiévale (fin du viie-début ou courant du viiie siècle). Les vestiges, de conservation différenciée, consistent en fossés courbes, fonds de cabane et quelques fosses, foyers et trous de poteau dont l’organisation n’apparaît pas. Par une cartographie régressive, il est assuré que la parcelle voisine correspond au site de la curtis Sancti Vulmari ou cense de Saumer, attestée pour la première fois en 1148, abandonnée vers 1475, mais dont l’emplacement est rappelé jusqu’au xviiie siècle. Les mentions de la court au xiie siècle sont de plus associées à un altare (autel et droits afférents), une église Saint-Wulmer tôt disparue (dès le début du xiiie siècle ?). Le report sur le cadastre ancien de la dîme, associée au domaine du bas Moyen Âge, montre un ensemble compact centré sur la cense, correspondant sans doute à l’emprise de l’ancien domaine ( xiie- xiiie siècles ou antérieur ?). Si la continuité d’occupation de la fin du viie siècle au xiie siècle ne peut être prouvée sur la base d’une fouille aussi limitée, elle ne peut être écartée a priori. Quelques indices amènent encore à penser que l’occupation de cette partie de la Gohelle pourrait avoir été structurée par un dense réseau de domaines de plus ou moins grande étendue. Dans le cas de Méricourt, l’agrégation villageoise pourrait bien ensuite s’être effectuée auprès du château, dans les limites d’un finage sans correspondance avec les anciennes paroisses et régi par les coutures seigneuriales. À la compacité du dîmage de Saumer s’opposerait l’éclatement parcellaire du domaine des xve- xviiie siècles, conséquence, mais à quelle époque, de cette supposée (ré)organisation territoriale.
