« Roman de la terre », My Ántonia concourt à réinventer le réalisme américain : écrire la terre consiste moins à la cadastrer, à l’encadrer, à relever les traces de ses mutations, qu’à instaurer une coïncidence entre la matière malléable des mots et les transformations du monde sensible. Dans ce roman en effet, Cather sollicite la structure et la substance du discours afin de donner à ressentir la présence de la terre américaine. Le sens du roman ne se trouve pas du côté des enchaînements d’actions qui entraînent le narrateur vers le succès social ou des événements du progrès qui métamorphosent la wilderness en territoire balisé, mais du côté des moments d’intensité, des « coexistences sensibles » où les choses ordinaires revêtent soudain un sens inédit et radieux.

As a “novel of the soil,” Willa Cather’s My Ántonia succeeds in reinventing American realism: writing the land does not so much mean mapping, framing or recording the traces of its transformations, as creating some coincidence between the malleable texture of discourse and the constant movements of the earth. In this novel, Cather addresses the structure and the substance of discourse in order to make the reader feel the presence of the American land. The sense of the novel is not situated in the succession of actions that lead the narrator to social success or in the achievements of progress transforming the wilderness into some chartered territory, but in the moments of intensity, of coexistences, when ordinary things are suddenly endowed with some unexpected, radiant meaning.
