La politique des profanes. Formes d'action politique et pratiques de citoyenneté des jeunes adultes

Comment les profanes conçoivent-ils politique et citoyenneté ? À quels types d’actions ces représentations sont-elles associées ? L’enquête conduite auprès de jeunes adultes non militants fait apparaître que les pratiques qu’ils qualifient de politiques ne se limitent pas aux interactions avec la politique institutionnelle. De fait, deux tiers des personnes interrogées revendiquent comme politiques des actions sans rapport avec la sphère des gouvernants et mettent en avant différents mécanismes de transformation sociopolitique dont les deux principaux — citoyenneté éthique et citoyenneté spécifique — sont analysés ici plus en détail. Les formes d’action politiques mobilisées par les profanes le sont aussi, avec un fond plus dense, dans le monde militant. Cette communauté d’intuition politique atteste, contre une conception élitiste de la démocratie, que la capacité politique — qui ne se réduit pas à une compétence institutionnelle — n’est pas en soi liée à un savoir d’expert.

The Politics of the Profane : Forms of Political Action and Citizenship Practices of Young AdultsHow do profanes conceive politics and citizenship ? To which types of action are these representations associated ? The study conducted on non-militant young adults shows that the practices they consider to be political do not limit themselves to interactions with institutional politics. In fact, two thirds of those interviewed claimed a political dimension to actions that did not entertain any rapport with institutional politics. They also put forward different socio-political mechanisms, which this article analyses under the names of ethical citizenship and specific citizenship. Interestingly, the forms of political action mobilised by such profanes are the same as those of the militants, notwithstanding a difference in intensity. In contradistinction with an elitist conception of democracy, such forms of intuitive political communities support the argument that political capacity cannot be reduced to institutional competences and is not dependent on expert knowledge.
