This thesis takes as its object of study the fence in suburban neighbourhoods in France. The research focused on understanding the role that fences plays in the organisation of everyday space, from a symbolic, social and physical point of view. The methodology implemented is based on the combination of different methods of investigation (interviews, photographic and drawing surveys, cartographies) allowing us to understand the organisation of the space, the material devices that define it and its experience. The articulation of these different methods made it possible, throughout the research, to confront the discourses of the inhabitants and the physical space, in its geometry and materiality. The research focused in particular on understanding the different interactions taking place around and with the fence, by re-interpreting the concept of appropriation of the space in its interactional dimension. More than a mark of isolation, withdrawal, or individualism, the fence appears as an agent fully participating in the adjustments and readjustments of the order of interaction governing and linking the suburban space and its inhabitants.

Cette thèse prend comme objet d'étude la clôture, dans les quartiers pavillonnaires, en France. La recherche s’est attachée à comprendre le rôle que joue la clôture dans l’organisation de l’espace quotidien, d’un point de vue symbolique, social et physique. La méthodologie mise en place s’appuie sur le croisement de différentes modalités d’enquête (entretiens, relevés photographiques et dessinés, cartographies) permettant d’appréhender l’organisation de l’espace, les dispositifs matériels qui le définissent et son vécu. L’articulation de ces différentes méthodes a permis, tout au long de la recherche, de confronter les discours des habitant·es et l’espace physique, dans sa géométrie et sa matérialité. La recherche s'est notamment concentrée sur la compréhension des différentes interactions prenant place autour et avec la clôture, en réinterrogeant le concept d'appropriation de l'espace dans sa dimension interactionnelle. Plus qu’une marque d’isolement, de repli, ou d’individualisme, la clôture apparait comme un actant participant pleinement aux ajustements et réajustements de l’ordre de l’interaction régissant et reliant l’espace pavillonnaire et ses habitant·es.
