Claude Imberty, « Gender e generi letterari: il caso di Goliarda Sapienza », HAL-SHS : littérature, ID : 10670/1.apc603
In this article the author examines the structure of Goliarda Sapienza’s novel L’arte della gioia. Noticing that the first part of the story (about 150 pages) seems to contradict the other three parts of the book, he tries to analyse the meaning of the gap between the first chapters which refer to Modesta’s childhood and youth, and the narrative of her life after she has inherited Gaia’s estates and fortune. The author’s view is that in the first hundred pages of her book Goliarda Sapienza plays with the plots and characters typical of the Bildungsroman and the gothic novel in order to denounce the misogynist clichés that prevail in those two genres. In that perspective the first part of Goliarda Sapienza’s novel should be considered as a preliminary text, a necessary first step before Modesta becomes an independent female character, a liberated and fulfilled woman called Principessa.
