David Sudre et al., « Le basket NBA : l’incarnation d’une Amérique « post-raciale » ? », Revue de recherche en civilisation américaine, ID : 10670/1.axrq6r
The history of North American basketball unveils a double movement: the appropriation of the game by black communities on the one hand and the essentialisation of the Afro-American culture and style on the other. This creates an ambiguous definition of the position of Black Americans in today’s society, both over-estimated in the field of the game and undervalued in the field of their social skills. This is exemplified through the careers of former players as well as in the definition of models linking “black bodies” and capitalistic values. Therefore, the commercial policies of the NBA use an “otherness” that they put on stage. One can nevertheless wonder whether this overexposure of Afro-Americans really represents another step towards integration or if, on the contrary, the NBA exploits a "post racial illusion" that is still deeply anchored in the American social representations.
