"This article presents the results of a survey, analysis and critique of the work of the Canadian historian, sociologist and epistemologist of psychology Allan R. Buss. We Àrst detail the development of the social history of science in the context of the historiography of science. Buss' works are shown representative of such trends in the Àeld of the History of Psycholo - gy. Secondly, Canadian historiography of psychology towards the 1980’s, which constituted Buss’ intellec- tual climate, is then brieÁy described. Thirdly, Buss’ contributions to the history, sociology and epistemo- logy of psychology are then detailed and analyzed. His retrieval of Mannheim’s sociology of knowledge, his socio-historical analysis of humanism in Psycho- logy, his proposal on critical presentism and his eclec- tic epistemology of psychology are highlighted. We conclude that certain previous comments regarding the generality and the occasional superÀciality of Buss’ works are corroborated, yet we also claim that the innovative and seminal nature of such works is undeniable, thus them being essential to characterize the historiography of psychology '70s."
