« La Bibliothèque de Babel » de Jorge Luis Borges : métaphore de l’univers ?

Cette nouvelle approche du célèbre conte de l’écrivain argentin, Jorge Luis Borges, « La biblioteca de Babel », entend interroger, à partir d’un regard critique sur les différents dispositifs narratifs et symboliques mis en texte par l’auteur, la portée de cette bibliothèque imaginaire comme métaphore de l’univers. Après un rappel nécessaire de ce qu’a représenté la bibliothèque familiale dans l’enfance de l’écrivain et la bibliothèque municipale de sa ville, puis plus tard la Bibliothèque nationale argentine dans lesquelles il a eu à travailler, cette contribution examine comment le texte borgésien met progressivement en place des stratégies narratives qui tendent in fine à faire de la bibliothèque la représentation d’un monde, sans doute labyrinthique, mais surtout infini.

This approach of the famous short story by Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges “La biblioteca de Babel” aims at studying how the library becomes a metaphor for the universe through a critical assessment of the various narrative and symbolic systems set up by the author. After a necessary reminder of the importance of the family library for the author as a child, but also of the municipal library of his town and later the Argentinian National Library where he worked, this article examines the way in which Borges’s text gradually sets up narrative strategies which in the end contribute to making of the library a representation of a labyrinthine but also, mostly, infinite world.
