"The relative importance of the Mexican Agricultural Sector has decreased in terms ofparticipation in the Gross Internal Product. This process has been accelerated in the last twodecades because of the reduction and/or elimination of subsidies to basic inputs and supportprices. Agricultural research has been working under this context. Because of significantreduction in governmental budget, agricultural research institutions are looking foralternative sources of financial support. Agricultural researchers have had to change theirattitudes facing now a new era in which research funds are now been assigned in acompetitive basis."
