The relationship between international trade and the environment is complex and not easy to understand. Even though the World Trade Organization is promoting an opening of national markets in order to encourage sustainable development, confrontations of values and logics underpinned by global trade and environmental protection always remain topical. The net balance of world trade’s effects on the environment remains unclear and environmental policies cannot replace trade policies. In this context, discourses relating to sustainable trade tend to increase: is this possible and according to what terms?
