Markos Renieris, un grand intellectuel grec de la période après l’indépendance grecque, dans son livre majeur Philosophie de l’histoire, a été fortement influencé par l’historicisme de Giambattista Vico. Renieris voit dans l’évolution de l’histoire de l’humanité un mouvement qui va de l’esprit du peuple et sa sagesse vers l’instauration du principe de l’Ego par Luther et, surtout, par Descartes. L’avènement de ce principe signifie l’établissement de ce qu’on pourrait appeler les sciences humaines en tant que structures d’oppression égotiste. Le témoignage central pour ce développement se trouve dans les textes mais, principalement, dans la production artistique qui forme l’iconologie du passage du peuple à l’Ego et de la lutte entre l’Ego et le non-Ego. Or, l’iconicité, ainsi établie par Renieris, n’évite pas l’orientalisme à propos de Byzance qui passe dans l’ombre pour ne pas nuire à sa vision de la totalité.

Markos Renieris is a reputed Greek intellectual of the period after the proclamation of the independence of the Greek state. His major book, Philosophy of History (1841) is greatly influenced by the historicism of Giambattista Vico. Renieris sees in the evolution of the history of humanity a move from the spirit of the people and its fundamental wisdom toward the instauration of the principle of the Ego achieved by Luther and mostly by Descartes. The rise of this principle means the establishment of what one may call the human sciences as oppressive instruments of the Ego. The central evidence for this development is found in the texts but mainly in the artistic production that forms the iconology of the passage from the people to the Ego and of the battle between the Ego and the non-Ego. Yet, the iconicity thus formulated by Renieris does not avoid the Orientalism about Byzantium which is ideologically evicted as nuisance in regard to Renieris’s vision of totality.
