For Henri Lefebvre, the new town of Mourenx, built for the Lacq gas workers, is not a city like the one to which every human being is entitled. It lacks the centrality, the common space, necessary for meetings and collective development. Its conception is opposed to the dynamics of society, to the possibility of a political voice for the inhabitants. Yet living becomes the fundamental social relationship when industrial work disappears. The city has to be invented as a common space, as a collective construction holding the inhabitants together.

Pour Henri Lefebvre, la ville nouvelle de Mourenx, construite pour les travailleurs du gaz de Lacq, n’est pas une ville comme celle à laquelle tout être humain a droit. Elle manque de la centralité, de l’espace commun, nécessaire aux rencontres et au développement collectif. Sa conception s’oppose à la dynamique de la société, à la possibilité d’une parole politique des habitants. Or l’habiter devient la relation sociale fondamentale quand le travail industriel disparaît. La ville est à inventer comme espace commun, comme construction collective tenant les habitants ensemble.
