Luis Vázquez et al., « Contribution of traditional peasant agriculture to the agroecological transition in Cuba », HAL SHS (Sciences de l’Homme et de la Société), ID : 10.17141/mundosplurales.1.2025.6354
Since the beginning of Cuba’s agroecological transition, traditional peasant agriculture has played an important role in preserving productive practices that respect biodiversity and soils for resilience. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the role that this form of agriculture has played and continues to play in Cuba. We focus on the role of peasant experimentation and innovation, with the participation of peasants in the adaptation and diffusion of agroecological practices. Traditional peasant agriculture has played an important role in national agroecological research projects and programs, facilitating the validation of techniques, the diffusion and contextualization of practices and organizing itself to continue experimenting at the local level. The main challenge today is for traditional peasant agriculture, but also agricultural research, to consider the contributions of peasant systems as laboratories for the construction of local food systems.
