Thierry Nallet, « Towards Ecocentrism. Deconstruction of anthropocentrism in José MaríaMerino's Cuentos de la naturaleza from an ecocritical perspective », HAL SHS (Sciences de l’Homme et de la Société), ID : 10.14198/PANGEAS.24704
In José María Merino's Cuentos de la naturaleza, selected and edited by Natalia Álvarez Méndez, the naturalenvironment stands out not as a mere background but as the protagonist of stories written throughout hissuccessful literary career. In the fantastic and supernatural manner of which he is a master, José María Merinoenunciates through these tales or microfictions, with the tone of fables or apologues, the ethical implicationsof considering nature as an ecosystem, that is to say, an absolute and vital entity. This article explores thewriter’s naturocentric, and ultimately ecocentric, perspective. Man is integrated into nature, but nature hasalso become, with the Anthropocene and climate change, the core of human history. Cuentos de la naturalezaplays symbolically with time, the ages on a human scale from childhood to maturity, as well as the futurehistory conditioned by scientific fiction and the anticipation of what might happen. Likewise, the treatment ofspace at various levels, from the cosmos to the virus, leads to a relativism that questions anthropocentrism. In fact, this poetics of nature revolves around the larger theme of consciousness: ecological consciousnesswith thought-provoking texts, ethical awareness of the environment, and consciousness of humanised natureitself. After all, the assumption is that these stories, by imitating in a certain way the imaginary voice ofnature, seek and succeed in deconstructing the traditional anthropocentric vision of the universe.
