Ce travail doctoral porte sur l'armement offensif et défensif des peuples de l'Italie préromaine. Cet intérêt n'est pas qu'encyclopédique : la guerre constitue, dès l'Antiquité, un ensemble de techniques et de pratiques intimement liées au politique, aux organisations sociales et territoriales, et aux codes éthiques et moraux défendus au sein d'une communauté humaine. En s'intéressant au concept théorique de système d'armes, nous avons cherché à voir en quoi il s'appliquait aux armées antiques, et notamment dans le cadre du laboratoire technique et militaire que constitue l'Italie préromaine. Nous avons, pour explorer ces questions, procédé à une vaste revue typologique et chronologique des formes d'équipements guerriers documentés dans les contextes funéraires et votifs de l'Italie centrale et méridionale, entre les années 550 et 200 av. J.-C. ; en outre, nous avons procédé au catalogue raisonné des scènes de combat et des équipements représentés dans l'iconographie italique et italiote contemporaine, afin d'analyser les liens discursifs et sémantiques entre images du guerrier, pratique des armes, gestes du combat, et forme des panoplies mobilisées à la guerre. En faisant la revue des données historiques littéraires sur les ordres de bataille connus pour cette période, nous avons proposé une restitution hypothétique de l'ordre de bataille "théorique" des Italiques, afin d'affiner le cadre de compréhension des engagements militaires qui marquèrent à intervalle régulier les relations interethniques de la région.

This doctoral work deals with the offensive and defensive armament of the peoples of pre-Roman Italy. This interest is not only encyclopaedic: from antiquity onwards, war constitutes a set of techniques and practices intimately linked to politics, to social and territorial organisations, and to ethical and moral codes defended within a human community. By focusing on the theoretical concept of the weapon system, we sought to see how it applied to ancient armies, particularly in the context of the technical and military laboratory that was pre-Roman Italy. In order to explore these questions, we have carried out a broad typological and chronological review of the forms of warrior equipment documented in the funerary and votive contexts of central and southern Italy between the years 550 and 200 BC. In addition, we proceeded to the catalogue raisonné of the combat scenes and equipment represented in contemporary Italic and Italico-Italian iconography, in order to analyse the discursive and semantic links between images of the warrior, the practice of weapons, the gestures of combat, and the form of the panoplies used in war. By reviewing the literary historical data on the orders of battle known for this period, we have proposed a hypothetical restitution of the "theoretical" order of battle of the Italics, in order to refine the framework of understanding of the military engagements that marked the interethnic relations of the region at regular intervals.
