Résumé 0

The Jews of the Maghreb in Lyons (1900-1945), by Sylvie AltarThe presence of Jews from the Maghreb in the area surrounding Lyons began well before the 1960s. While some arrived alone before the First World War, entire families settled for work or to flee the outbreaks of pogromist violence that shook North Africa during the period between the two wars. With the war, the fate of these Jews became confused with that of their co-religionists. They paid a heavy price for Nazi barbarism. This article examines, on a human scale, how they lived through the war and how they also tried to survive, playing on their Judeo-Maghrebi variable. After the Liberation of Lyons (September 3, 1944), the time was ripe for reconstruction, then the influx of pieds-noirs repatriates rejuvenuated a sluggish Lyons Jewry.
