Neither the achievements nor shortcomings of German-language historiography of medieval rural history during the last 35 years can be understood without an analysis both of institutional and intellectual peculiarities of German historiography in general, and of its groundings in more remote times. Consequently rural history today has only a rather marginal position, reinforced by its difficulty, not so much in developing new themes and methods of research, as in acknowledging these new developments and including them in a new paradigm which would replace an older one, deeply rooted in the Nazi period.

Es imposible entender ni los logros ni los fracasos de la historiografía en alemán sobre la historia rural medieval durante los últimos treinta y cinco años sin analizar las peculiaridades, tanto institucionales como intelectuales, de la historiografía alemana en general, así como de sus mas antiguas raíces. Porque las consecuencias no son sólo la posición bastante marginal de la historia rural actualmente, agravada por su dificultad no tanto para abordar nuevos temas y métodos de investigación, como para reconocerlos e incluirlos en un nuevo paradigma que pueda reemplazar el antiguo, tan profundamente arraigado en el período nazi.
