This dataset originated as part of the author's PhD research, undertaken at the University of Cambridge, Department of Archaeology, 2016-2024. It supports the thesis: "Human conceptualisations of non-human animals in the Scandinavian Bronze Age: perspectives from Swedish rock carvings". The methods for selecting, recording, codifying, and analysing the data is described in detail in Chapter 4 of the associated thesis. This dataset includes images, metadata, observations, and the results of statistical analyses for petroglyph figures from Bronze Age rock carving sites in Sweden. The source of the images studied is the Svenskt Hällristnings Forskinings Arkiv (Swedish Rock Art Research Archive; SHFA; https://shfa.dh.gu.se/). See file "Appendix A.1. Appendices table of contents (READ ME).pdf" for a description of the contents. The main dataset comprises data recorded from 504 figurative depictions from across 56 rock art sites primarily in the region of Bohuslän, Sweden, with individual animal figures being the primary unit of analysis. An auxiliary dataset, derived from the author's Master’s dataset and expanded for this project, uses anthropomorph figures as the primary unit of analysis, and includes 678 anthropomorphic figures and 202 animal figures from 92 sites in Bohuslän.
