Résumé En

Symeon the New Theologian not only maintains close relations with the aristocratic milieu from which he originates. He refers to it or alludes to it repeatedly throughout his works to describe and explain the monk's relationship with God that he compares to the relationship between the emperor and his archons. These mentions, rich and numerous, that accord with realia and events of his time, will be discussed: they reveal that the political and social order of the Byzantine Empire is conceived and thought by Symeon after the model of the Pseudo-Denys’ hierarchy. Symeon grants the aristocracy a full and complete position without questioning the primacy of the emperor, even if the latter is relative. From the writings of this spiritual father emerges a coherent and comprehensive vision of Byzantine power.
