La Terre au lieu de La Méditation : Découverte d’un plâtre de Rodin au Nationalmuseum de Stockholm

Résumé 0

In 1897 Rodin sent a plaster to the international exhibition organized in Stockholm. Based on a letter from the artist, this plaster has always been identified as La Voix Intérieure ( The Interior Voice) or Meditation. But it had never been found, until, in 2018, in the reserves of the Nationalmuseum, a proof of La Terre (The Earth) was discovered. This work was also part of the group of partial figures in which Rodin confirmed the new direction that his research was taking in the mid-1890s. Rereading archival documents demonstrates that the organizers of the exhibition that took place this same year 1897 in Dresden wanted La Voix Intérieure. As a wise strategist, anxious to not disappoint his admirers, and also desiring to publicize his recent works, Rodin probably decided at the last moment, and without warning anyone, to replace La Voix Intérieure by La Terre, which was slightly earlier. This article sheds light on Rodin’s working methods and strategy, based on the example of the reception of this plaster in Sweden.
