François de Singly : Berühmte Künstler. Die Fragen, die der Soziologe beantworten muss, um die professionnelle Identität der sozialen Aktoren zu erfahren, sind schwieriger, wenn es sich um Künstler handelt, da die Grenzen dieser Kategorie verschwimmen. Welche Kriterien mussen zur Objektivierung dieser Gruppe berücksichtigt werden : die wirtschaftliche Unabhängigkeit (von diesem Beruf leben konnen), die Selbstbezeichnung (sich als Kunstler erklären), eine spezifische Kompetenz (ein Diplom einer Kunstschule besitzen) die soziale Anerkennung im Künstlermilieu (von anderen Künstlern oder von Kritikem zitiert werden) ? Der Centre de sociologie des arts (Zentrum der Soziologie der Kiinste) hat dieses letzte Kriterium ausgewählt um die Kunstler in Frankreich zu erfassen. Eine solche Arbeit bietet Interesse nicht nur indem sie eine Beschreibung der Zugangsbedingungen zum Kunstlerleben und zur Kunstlerberuhmtheit vorlegt, sondern sie bereichert auch die Uberlegung zum Verhältnis zwischen allgemeiner und wissenschaftlicher Kenntnis der sozialen Welt.

The questions the sociologist must answer in order to determine the professional identity of social agents are more difficult when they deal with artists, given the hazy borderlines of this category. To define this group more objectively, what factors would be retained : economic independence (the ability to make a living from this profession), self-designation (declaring oneself an artist), a specific proficiency, e.g. graduating from a school of fine arts, social recognition in an artistic milieu (being referred to by other artists or art critics) ? The Center of Sociology of the Arts has chosen the last criterion to count artists in France. The interest of this study is not only that of suggesting a description of conditions of access to artistic life and of the lives of artists in the foreground, but also of enriching thought on the connection between common knowledge and scholarly knowledge of the social environment.
Les questions auxquelles le sociologue doit répondre pour connaître l'identité professionnelle des acteurs sociaux sont plus difficiles lorsqu'il s'agit des artistes, étant donné le flou des frontières de cette catégorie. Pour objectiver ce groupe, quels critères retenir : l'indépendance économique (vivre de cette profession), l'auto-désignation (se déclarer artiste), une compétence spécifique (être diplômé d'une école des Beaux-Arts), la reconnaissance sociale dans le milieu artistique (être cité par d'autres artistes ou par des critiques) ? Le Centre de sociologie des arts a choisi ce dernier critère pour effectuer le recensement des artistes en France. Un tel travail a pour intérêt non seulement de proposer une description des conditions d'accès à la vie d'artiste et à celle d'artiste en vue, mais aussi d'enrichir la réflexion sur l'articulation entre connaissance ordinaire et connaissance savante du monde social.

Los problemas a los cuales el sociólogo debe responder para conocer la identidad profesionál de los actores sociales son más dificiles cuando se trata de los artistas, dado lo impreciso de las fronteras de esta categoria. Para objetivar este grupo, ¿ qué criterios retener : la independencia ecónomica (vivir de esta profesión), la auto-designación (declararse artista), una competencia especifica (ser diplomado de una escuela de bellas artes), el reconocimiento social en el medio artistico (ser mencionado por otros artistas о роr unas criticas) ? El Centro de sociologia de las artes a escogido este ultimo criterio para efectuar el empadronamiento de los artistas en Francia. Un tal trabajo tiene por interés no solamente de proponer una descripción de las condiciones de acceso a la vida de artista y a aquella de artista a la vista, sino también de enriquecer la reflexión sobre la articulación entre conocimiento ordinario y conocimiento sabio del mundo social.
