Stones speak to us. For thousands of years, stone has been one of the basic materials of human habitat, from the Troglodyti to our day and age. We will dwell specifically on architect Fernand Pouillon’s novel, The Stones of the Abbey, in which he imagines the diary of the master builder of Le Thoronet Abbey. After referring to the construction of this abbey in the 12th century, we will highlight how vital a role stone has taken in today’s architecture. Considered as a natural ressource for the future, stone is particularly relevant in the context of an environmental shift which is currently renewing with a vernacular artform based on awareness and endowed with a wealth of secrets.

Les pierres nous parlent. Les roches constituent depuis des millénaires un des matériaux de base de l’habitat humain, des troglodytes jusqu’à aujourd’hui. L’auteure s’arrête plus particulièrement sur le roman de l’architecte Fernand Pouillon, Les pierres sauvages, dans lequel il imagine le journal du maître d’oeuvre de l’Abbaye du Thoronet. Après s’être référée à la construction de cette abbaye au xiie siècle, elle souligne la forte reprise de la pierre dans l’architecture contemporaine, considérée comme une ressource naturelle du futur, particulièrement appropriée à une bifurcation écologique renouant avec un art vernaculaire attentionné et plein de secrets.
