Dante's presence in Vico's work, with the exception of a few punctual references, becomessignificant from the Scienza Nuova onwards. But what is the significance of this presence? Ourhypothesis is that the function of the Florentine poet in Vico's work is not that of exemplifyingthe greatness of the poetry of barbaric times, as the Croce reading that looks at Vico as thefounder of aesthetics would tend to suggest. This function, in particular through the comparisonwith Homer, is instead to demonstrate how for the poetic humanity of barbaric times poetry canonly be history.

La présence de Dante dans l'œuvre de Vico, à l'exception de quelques références ponctuelles,devient significative à partir de la Scienza Nuova. Mais quelle signification cette présence revêtelle ? Notre hypothèse est que la fonction du poète florentin dans l'œuvre de Vico n'est pas celled’illustrer la grandeur de la poésie des temps barbares, comme tendrait à le suggérer la lecturede Croce qui voit en Vico le fondateur de l'esthétique. Cette fonction, notamment à travers lacomparaison avec Homère, consiste au contraire à démontrer comment, pour l'humanitépoétique des temps barbares, la poésie ne peut être qu'histoire.

La presenza di Dante nell’opera vichiana, ad eccezione di qualche rimando puntuale, diventasignificativa a partire dalla Scienza Nuova. Ma che significato assume questa presenza? La nostraipotesi è che la funzione del poeta fiorentino nell’opera vichiana non sia quella di esemplificare lagrandezza della poesia dei tempi barbari, come tenderebbe a suggerire la lettura crociana cheguarda a Vico come al fondatore dell’estetica. Tale funzione, in particolare attraverso il paragonecon Omero, è invece quella di dimostrare come per l’umanità poetica dei tempi barbari la poesianon possa essere che storia.
