Figure dominante de la statistique administrative italienne, universitaire et « scientifique social » de premier plan, Gini fait écho à la tradition antiparlementariste de l’après-Risorgimento ainsi qu’à la pensée politique et sociale qui voit dans le modèle cyclique son schème d’intelligibilité privilégié. Mais sa critique de la démocratie ne prend pas la forme d’une réaction traditionaliste. Fondée sur une analyse des problèmes de mesure, de pondération et d’agrégation des préférences, elle apparaît susceptible d’autoriser un esprit animé par l’idéal scientifique à se rallier au fait accompli.

An academic and first rate social scientist who gained preeminence in italian administrative statistics, Gini echoed the traditional post-Risorgimento anti-parliamentarism as well as the social and political currents which framed their favourite conceptual schemes according to cyclic models. His criticism of democracy, however, did not belong to the reactionary traditionalist variety but was grounded on an analysis of the problems of measuring, balancing and aggregating preferences, which could allow a mind infused with scientific ideals such as his to submit to things as they are.
