The Spoliation of the Jews in Occupied France: Establishing the ‘Furniture Mission’ in the Aube Department (1942-1944)In July 1942, while a first round-up was about to take place in the city of Troyes, the Sipo-SD ordered the French authorities to seal up the homes of the Jews that were to be arrested. This order initiated the beginning of the ‘Furniture Mission’ in the Aube Department, which was underway by March 1943 and orchestrated by the Dienststelle Westen (DW). With the help of the French prefecture, the DW identified and classified the pieces of furniture belonging to Jews and prepared for their removal and transportation to a warehouse in Troyes. The ‘Furniture Mission’ proved to be quite complicated for the French administration. It had to face the claims of some of the owners, as well as for the DW, which had to deal with the Feldkommandantur over the issue of whether the furniture should be allocated to the German troops, as well as the problematic transportation of the stolen goods to Germany.
