Résumé En

Drawn to Triomf by a strong feeling of affinity, Donald Moerdijk, was moved to translate it. As a teacher of translation, he was brought up short by the gulf that exists between academic translation exercises and the complexity of a literary work. This article is a reflection on the questions arising during that encounter with a literary work. Firstly, differences between translation exercises and 'real' translation cohere around questions of context and form. Secondly, identity comes into play, shaped by the needs of expression and communication. The presence or absence of author and translator in the "re-expression" are considered: the translator remains himself and must express himself in the awareness of the other with whom he communicates, yet every aspect of that act of communicative expression is conditioned by the original expression and identity of the original author. Ultimately, a fusion of identities takes place.
