During the Weimar Republic, schools and theatres were fighting for the monopoly of cultural canons and the definition of classical works. School and university were no longer the only guardians of the tradition, as the director and the drama critic turned into key figures in theatrical production. Inside the university, the new Theaterwissenschaft claimed the right to decide and define with the Germanists what and who should be considered as “canonical work” or “classical writer”. Max Herrmann (1865-1942) played a major part in this episode of social and cultural competition.
