Résumé 0

This article proposes to analyse the marital arrangements operating in couples in modest social layers, where the man is absent for work reasons for the whole or part of the week. The labour market builds a specifically male mobility, which is only possible because women’s is restricted. This gendered topography raises the question of the unequal autonomy that men and women enjoy. Whereas love incarnates an ideal of reciprocity, the asymmetry of the partners is a barrier to this reciprocity. The individual identity that men are given from the outset by their socialisation is the fruit of a life-long experience for women, and the cost of reaching it is sometimes high.
