Local Administration and the Round-Ups of the Summer of 1942 under Vichy. The Case of Auvergne This study analyses how, daily, a local administration applied the anti-Semitic public policy of the Vichy government. The deportation of the Jews from France was the result of the cumulative effect of these small gestures of cooperation, behaviors that, taken altogether comprised a coherent policy. Each administrative agent, guided by his habits, played a role, perhaps-except for the most fanatical--without enthusiasm, but nonetheless conscientiously, thus contributing to the effectiveness of this anti-Semitic public action.
