Sealsfields erster unter dem Pseudonym C. Sidons 1827 zuerst auf deutsch, und anschließend auf englisch veröffentlichter Amerika-Text Die Vereinigen Staaten von Nordamerika ist zwar literarhistorisch ohne große Wirkung geblieben, darf aber dennoch zu einem ungewöhnlichen Projekt im Feld der Reiseprosa des frühen 19. Jhdts. gerechnet werden. Er ist nämlich ein erster bedeutender Beitrag zum Amerika-Europa-Diskurs mit klarer Präferenz für die republikanisch-demokratische Gesellschaftsform und aus dieser Optik als Provokation des europäischen Lesers gedacht. Durch die Zweiteilung in ein politisch räsonierendes erstes Buch sowie in ein zweites, das eine konkrete Reise durch mehrere amerikanische Staaten zum Inhalt hat und dabei nicht unproblematische kulturelle Hierarchisierungen vornimmt, trägt das Gesamtprojekt stilistisch und sprachlich hybride Züge. Somit kann es auch als ein interessanter Versuch gesehen werden, unterschiedliche Techniken literarischer Kommunikation auszuloten.

Sealsfields America-Report Die Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika, first published in German 1827 under the pseudonym C. Sidons and then in an English version certainly did not have a significant impact on literary history. Nevertheless we can classify it as one of the more extraordinary projects in the rich field of the developing genre of travel-literature in the early 19th century. Being one of the first remarkable contributions to the discourse about America and Europe the text shows a clear preference for the republican-democratic model of society, with the intention of provoking the continental European reader. The first part of this report deals with political and social aspects, the second part contains to some extent an account of his travels through several states whereby the author postulates some rather problematic cultural hierarchies. The entire project can be seen therefore as an stylistic and linguistic hybrid but also as an attempt to explore different techniques of literary communication.

Le premier texte de Sealsfield consacré à l’Amérique, Die Vereinigen Staaten von Nordamerika (Les Etats-Unis d’Amérique du Nord), publié d’abord en allemand, puis en anglais sous le pseudonyme C. Sidons, n’a certes pas connu de grande fortune dans l’histoire littéraire, mais il n’en demeure pas moins un projet inhabituel appartenant au champ de la littérature de voyage du début du XIXe siècle. Il est en effet une première contribution importante au dialogue américano-européen, avec une nette préférence pour la société démocratique et républicaine et est, de ce point de vue, conçu pour provoquer le lecteur européen. En raison de la division en deux parties, avec un premier livre politico-réflexif et un second qui décrit un voyage entrepris à travers différents états américains et propose des hiérarchisations culturelles problématiques, le projet, dans son ensemble, présente des traits stylistiques et linguistiques hybrides. Cela permet précisément de considérer cette œuvre comme une tentative intéressante d’explorer diverses techniques de communication littéraire.
