Turkey-Armenia: Normalization held hostage by the past and present

Résumé 0

In February 2022, a public opinion poll conducted by the Turkish Kadir Has University as part of its annual research programme reported the answers of its respondents on the relationship with Armenia and Armenians: “60.9 % of the Turkish population considers Armenia a threat to Turkey.” To the question “would you accept a neighbour of Armenian nationality?” only 8.2 % had answered positively. A poll conducted in Armenia would be likely to find similar responses. This confirms the hypothesis that there is no agenda for peace despite the ongoing process of normalisation of relations initiated by the government of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pachinian in the wake of the military defeat in Nagorno-Karabakh by the Azerbaijani and Turkish armies.
