Résumé 0

What is a scientific sculpture? Étienne-Jules Marey provided an original response with a bronze piece, Le Vol du goéland. This famous object is one of the images that revolutionized the representation of movement at the dawn of the twentieth century. This singular object gives us the “form of movement,” a scientific datum obtained from chronophotographic results recorded on multiple fixed plates. The ambiguous status of the sculpture is however prevalent: through the dialectic of a unique form and a series of images, of scientific and aesthetic experiments, the limit between art and science seems to blur.
