Résumé
Sovereignty is not an end in itself, but rather an “instrument” at the service of democratic self-government. This article argues that it is from this angle, focusing on the relationship between sovereignty and democracy, that European sovereignty should be discussed. It highlights current democratic challenges and presents different forms of democratic added value that the European Union may bring in addressing these issues. It argues that, rather than a cause of the problems it faces today, the EU could be the solution for the future of Europe’s democracies and sovereignty.
