Puritanism is often regarded as a form of narrow-minded, austere, and especially prudish rigidity; an American Protestantism in a way, fundamentally defined by hatred of pleasure. But is this really Puritanism? The exodus of Puritans to New England in the seventeenth century sheds light on several aspects of US culture marked by the idea of divine election and organized around a logic of demonizing enemies.
