Résumé 0

In order to “age well,” that is, stay healthy and maintain social ties, older adults are frequently encouraged to remain active and to volunteer. This article analyzes the experiences of twelve older adults in French-speaking Switzerland who take part in three types of voluntary work: activities run by a health organization, the organization of hikes for other older adults, and membership of cultural association committees. We study these older adults’ self-perception in terms of their motivations to engage in voluntary work. To do so, we test Joëlle Zask’s (2011) model of participation, which is based on three dimensions: taking part, contributing, and benefiting. Based on this model, we find differences between the older adults that link to their engagement contexts, gender, and socioeconomic status. Moreover, we find that imbalance between the three dimensions does not necessarily lead people to disengage.
