Résumé
Pope Francis published a letter on “the role of literature in formation” on August 4, 2024. It wouldn’t have had any impact outside the small circle of literate Catholics, had it not been for William Marx, professor and holder of the comparative literature chair at the Collège de France, who gave an accurate and laudatory account of it in a column in Le Monde. We asked him about the complex and ambivalent relationship between Christian tradition and literature, and the “revolutionary” character he attributes to the Pope’s letter.
