This review of André Schwarz-Bart’s autograph notes on slavery, the slave trade and the Revolution, prior to his novel La Mulâtresse Solitude, provides an insight into his writing practice(s). It is also a foray into uncharted territory. From the vantage point of genetic studies, it is indeed challenging to apprehend and define the peculiar status of these working notes since, being protean and elusive, they hover somewhere between field notes and a log book, reading notes and first drafts.

Cet article propose un plan rapproché sur les notes préparatoires autographes d’André Schwarz-Bart pour son roman La Mulâtresse Solitude. Une analyse ciblée de quelques-unes de ces notes préliminaires sur l’esclavage, la traite négrière et la Révolution, nous permettra d’identifier un certain nombre de constantes dans la pratique d’écriture d’André Schwarz-Bart. In fine, la présente étude interrogera le statut complexe et équivoque des notes de travail dans l’avant-texte, en soulignant leur caractère limitrophe et protéiforme qui les rapproche parfois d’un brouillon.
