How can we recognize and uphold a shared humanity in “those who no longer look human”? Following on from a previous article (Études, no. 4299, December 2022), this study examines extreme situations where a sense of belonging to humanity is not self-evident, when communication and consciousness seem to have disappeared. Rereading the parable of the Good Samaritan in such situations makes it possible to maintain a sense of belonging to a shared world, by refusing to allow anyone to be excluded.
