A re-reading of May 1968 based on confrontations involving extremist factions shows us that the student movement was not merely a product of liberalized social values; it also stemmed from a culture of political violence, with student activism during the Algerian conflict playing a key role. Antifascism and anticommunism were powerful mobilizing factors that encouraged student militancy.
