This article examines broad chronological trends in the settlement patterns of the first farming populations in the Seine basin, through the LBK – Blicquy-Villeneuve-Saint-Germain sequence (5200-4700 BC). The study focusses on four zones that have been intensively investigated through preventive archaeology (Aisne-Vesle, middle Oise, lower Marne, Seine-Yonne), producing a total of 119 settlements. The data enable a first comparative approach, based on criteria that include site location, surface area and the number of occupation phases. The regional and chronological comparisons reveal some diversity, as well as general trends. In the LBK, a clear regional difference can be seen in settlement density, considerably higher in the Aisne valley than in the other study zones. With very few exceptions, the emergence of the Blicquy-Villeneuve-Saint-Germain is marked by the foundation of new sites. The main trends observed in this period are territorial expansion, a wider range of site locations and a predominance of single-phase settlements. Data from the Marne provide some evidence for socio-economic changes underlying this gradual transition towards smaller sites and a more dispersed pattern of settlement.
