Qu’il existe des maîtres, c’est une évidence quotidienne ; que la notion en soit instable et difficile en est peut-être une autre. Je propose d’esquisser une archéologie de cette problématisation en examinant deux points de repère discursifs situés au début du XXe siècle : la conception normative du pouvoir magistral de Durkheim et celle, libertaire, de sa critique radicale par Neill. Mon propos ne sera pas d’inviter à trancher entre ces deux positions, mais bien plutôt à y repérer une antinomie pratico-discursive du pouvoir éducatif et de la subjectivation des enfants, du jeu qui s’installe, en eux, entre gouvernement de soi et gouvernement par autrui.

That there are masters is an obvious reality; and that the notion is difficult and unstable is perhaps another one. I intend to sketch an archeology of this problematization by studying two discursive landmarks located at the beginning of the 20th century: the durkhemian normative conception of the authoritative power and Neill’s libertarian radical critical one. My purpose will not be to decide between these two positions, but rather to identify a practice-discursive antinomy of the educational power and of the subjectivation of children, and to study the game that occurs in them between self-government and government-by-other.
