Marie-Jo Thiel, « Asymmetry of power and abuse of power in the context of spiritual and pastoral accompaniment », Revue d’éthique et de théologie morale, ID : 10670/1.chpy5q
The realities of relational asymmetry inherent in social and religious life cannot be avoided, but they are always liable to abuse of power in their various contextual forms. In Matthew 23, religious leaders are already using the asymmetry conferred on them by their role, their knowledge, and their power to impose themselves upon others and enslave them, monopolising the places of honour and usurping God’s authority while concealing their actions in hypocrisy. In the biblical narrative, the elements of today’s excesses and abuses are already present. This contribution examines the place and role of the asymmetry of power in pastoral and spiritual care. It then examines and attempts to substantiate some of the mechanisms that lead to abuse. Finally, it looks at ways of dealing with excesses of relational asymmetry and preventing abuse.
